CANYONING IN THE SIERRA DE GUARA a journey through time & space

During a first visit to the Guara canyons, surprise often gives way to wonder. Even after several years of canyoning in the Rios, we still fall under the spell of the landscapes: they dazzle us, shake up our sensitivity, engrave unforgettable moments in our memories. There is certainly something magical and mysterious in these Pyrenean mountains.

THE CANYONS, A WORK OF ART

In Sierra de Guara, the harmony between water and rock is obvious, it is a story that harkens back to the earliest ages of the earth. Several thousand years ago, an ocean named Thetis was there and slowly deposited sediments and fossils: by compression, it formed the rock.

What happens next is almost unimaginable: movements of tectonic plates, uprisings of the earth, sea currents of infinite power. Then with the retreat of the sea, slow erosion carried out by rivers crossing the Sierra de Guara massif from north to south creates immense faults in the limestone. Water creates canyons.

Every corner of the Sierra de Guara reveals unique landscapes, where cliffs and rocks dance with the aquatic element. The colors help create harmony: from the ocher red of the cliffs, to the emerald green of the water to the anthracite gray of the limestone.

THE INVENTION OF CANYONING

Quickly won over by these exuberant landscapes, the first explorers, Lucien Briet and Pierre Minvielle, ventured into the depths of Guara, unknowingly inventing an activity in its own right: canyoning.

Emptied of its inhabitants by 40 years of Francoist policy, the Sierra de Guara is finding a new lease of life thanks to tourism linked to this new activity. In the 1990s, its reputation grew and attracted more and more fans from all over the world to discover the most beautiful canyons in the world.

In this sudden excitement, the Sierra de Guara Natural Park was created in 1991 and the rock paintings discovered at the top of the Rio Vero were classified as UNESCO World Heritage in 1998.

ALQUEZAR, AN ARCHITECTURE FROZEN IN TIME

A real postcard of the Sierra de Guara, this medieval village is a must visit during a tourist stay in Aragon. Strolling under the shaded porches and arcades of Plaza Mayor, you can easily imagine the life of yesteryear taking place in the peaceful atmosphere of a small traditional village.

At the top of the rock, the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria watches over Alquezar. Built in the 9th century by the Moors, this ancient fortress invites you to travel and at the same time intimidates visitors. Below, the Rio Vero flows in its green setting among large cliffs giving a mystical dimension to the village.

FOCUS ON 3 MYTHICAL CANYONS OF SIERRA DE GUARA

The Sierra de Guara is renowned for the diversity of exceptional canyon descents it offers. Here are some examples:

RIO VERO: considered the first canyon explored as such, it is an immense gorge with impressive cliffs through which turquoise water flows. From potholes to potholes, the waterfalls and natural swimming pools make it a very fun canyon.

PEONERA: An aquatic canyon par excellence, it is one of the most requested of the Guara canyons. Rather easy to access, it corresponds to the Epinal images of canyoning: jumps, white water swimming, waterfalls…

MASCUN: Here is the great canyoning race of the Sierra de Guara. A long approach walk and numerous rope abseils between its smooth cliffs and its half-subterranean caves make it a major canyon.
