VIAS FERRATAS: AN ACTIVITY TO DISCOVER THE SIERRA DIFFERENTLY
Definition of via ferrata
Via ferrata is an outdoor activity between hiking and climbing, which allows participants to progress along rock walls equipped with cables, iron steps and other fixed installations. Via ferrata offers a safe experience, even for those without climbing experience. In fact, climbers are attached to a safety cable using a harness, called a “lifeline”, which allows them to enjoy spectacular panoramas while moving on varied routes, ranging from easy to very difficult. This activity is ideal for thrill-seekers, while remaining accessible to a wide audience. The difficulties can vary and are conditioned by the length, the commitment as well as by more or less steep passages in the via ferrata.
Appearing during the Second World War in the Dolomites, these “railways” made it possible to cross passes and connect towns in a secure manner.
Later, this means of progression became a sporting practice in its own right, via ferrata developed rapidly in the Alps and the Pyrenees and offered access to areas and viewpoints that were theoretically inaccessible.
